 The VATVCBHCS is comprised of the Corpus Christi Outpatient Clinic (CCOPC), Corpus Christi Specialty Clinic (CCSC), Harlingen Outpatient Clinic (HOPC), Health Care Center at Harlingen (HCC), Laredo Outpatient Clinic (LOPC), and McAllen Outpatient Clinic (MCOPC). The VATVCBHCS is an ambulatory health care system providing health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. The VATVCBHCS also operates a 100-patient Home Based Primary Care program and a 200-patient Care Coordination Home Tele-Health Program. Through the utilization of inpatient/emergency department contracts, approximately 2600 inpatient admission and 5800 ER visits are managed by VATVCBHCS. Affiliated with the University of Texas Regional Academic Health Campus, the system has an active ambulatory care program and serves as a teaching and training site for medical residents. The VATVCBHCS is responsible for an enrollee population of over 30,000 veterans and 350,000 outpatient visits annually.

The Chief, Surgery Service accomplishes the health care delivery mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs in general.  Services provided are subject to close scrutiny by Congressional interests, service organizations, the general public and the media.  The Chief, Surgery Service is to be a physician, board certified or board eligible in her/her specialty, having completed an appropriate residency or fellowship.  Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support is required.  Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is recommended. 


As Chief, Surgery Service, your duties will include, but are not limited to the following:


1. Assume the responsibility for the overall management of the Surgery Service.  This includes the organization of the administrative day-to-day activities of the Surgery department

2.  Ensure the service functions as an integrated care delivery system, providing full continuum of patient-focused Surgery services for Veterans.

3.  Coordinate and integrate the interdepartmental functions of surgical service.  This includes chairing relevant meetings.  Emphasize, and personally model, clear, compassionate, careful communication with other care lines and auxiliary services.

4.  VISN liaison for Surgery service issues, meetings, collaborative, and other activities.


1.  Interpretation of the testing and other specialty imaging to establish diagnosis and assist in management of conditions in respective specialty.

2.  Act as the consultant for patients referred to him/her for input regarding opinion or inte4rvention in respective specialty.

3.  Complete medical records and ensure subordinates complete medical records within a timely fashion and accordance with current VCB and VA guidance.

Quality of Care:

1.  Provide quality clinical care and service with regard to customer satisfaction, compliance with Joint Commission regulations and other relevant accrediting agencies as indicated, and ensure efficiency of service delivery.

Supervisory Controls:

This position reports to the Deputy Chief of Staff.  Administrative direction is provided in terms of broadly defined goals and missions.  The incumbent exercises a high degree of latitude in the planning, designing, implementation and accomplishment of program responsibilities.  The incumbent works within a framework of VA guidelines, directive and regulations.  Work is reviewed in terms of policy compliance and fulfillment of overall mission and program goals.
