    DUTY STATION: The duty station is at Jefferson Barracks Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on the needs of the medical center.

    Responsibilities

    PRIMARY FUNCTION: The function of the Primary Care Deputy Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS)  is to work directly with the Primary Care Associate Chief of Staff to ensure strategic goals and all VA initiatives under Primary Care Service, clinical and administrative,  and performance measures for the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) are met.  

    Major Duties and Responsibilities include:
    • Participates in both Medical Center and Primary Care Service-level management discussions, decision and policy-making
    • Provides program direction to the clinic manager and other assigned personnel in Primary Care and may be asked to represent the ACOS or participate in hospital committees on behalf of the ACOS.  
    • Works jointly with the Associate Chief of Nursing, Primary Care Service, to assist with the operational management of all Primary Care Clinics. 
    • Promotes, maintains and nurtures positive relationships within the provider teams with the goal of efficient healthcare delivery. 
    • Provides primary care to a panel of patients, proportionately adjusted to accommodate administrative responsibilities.  

    The Deputy Associate Chief of Staff Primary Care Physician will additionally practice clinically within their scope of practice in accordance with their credentialing and privileging. Duties may include but are not limited to:

    • Collaborates with a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) to provide accessible, comprehensive, coordinated, continuous care to an assigned panel of patients; the incumbent is expected to be attentive to patient education and preventive care and be able to work well in an interdisciplinary team to provide high quality primary care.
    • Manages chronic conditions, evaluates and treats intercurrent medical conditions; 
    • Performs a variety of disease prevention related activities including gender and age specific screenings (e.g. breast and colo-rectal cancer), mental health screenings (e.g. depression, substance use& abuse, military sexual trauma and PTSD) and health promotion activities including immunizations, weight management and exercise counseling; screens for, evaluates and treats uncomplicated common mental health disorders, including depression and common addictions, with referrals made to mental health providers for further evaluation and treatment as appropriate;
    • Performs common outpatient & office-based procedures. Performs preliminary interpretation of common diagnostic tests including EKG and plain x-ray films

    Administrative Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:  Overall management of administrative operations in Primary Care Clinics, and performance improvement in key management indicators such as access, efficient and effective business operations, and patient satisfaction.  Other activities include resource oversight, including fiscal and human resource management, and program management within Primary Care Service. 

    Facility/Area Information:  The VA St. Louis Health Care System is a two-division tertiary care facility providing inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, spinal cord injury, and rehabilitation, as well as 65 subspecialty areas. There are 218 hospital operating beds, a 71 bed Community Living Center, a 50 bed Rehabilitation Domiciliary for Homeless Veterans and a 25 bed Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program. This medical center services veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois. The John Cochran Division is located in midtown St. Louis and is in close proximity to its affiliated medical schools, Saint Louis University and Washington University. It houses the medical center's operative surgical capabilities, the ambulatory care unit, and a six-story Clinical Addition that includes the surgical facilities, intensive care units, and the clinical laboratory. The Jefferson Barracks Division is a multi-building complex situated in south St. Louis County.  It provides psychiatric treatment, regional spinal cord injury treatment, a nursing home care unit, geriatric health care, outpatient clinic, rehabilitation services, a domiciliary for homeless veterans and a newly opened Fisher House.  VA St. Louis utilizes an electronic medical record.  This medical center also maintains Community Based Outpatient Clinics in St. Charles, MO, Belleville, IL, Washington, MO, St. Louis City, and north St. Louis County.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.  However, physicians are on call 24/7.
