The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and nine community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

Duties

DUTIES:
The Deputy to the Chief of Staff (DCOS) is an executive position responsible to the Chief of Staff (COS). The DCOS position resides within the Executive Office and is directly supervised by the COS. Key qualities include leadership, strategic planning, matrix-teamwork building, quality improvement, and credentialing and privileging. The desired candidate will have proven managerial skills in a complex health care environment that can foster inter-institutional relationships in an academic setting. VAMC Memphis is a modern tertiary care facility, affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), Memphis.

The DCOS's primary focus is on clinical operations, with emphasis on performance, quality, safety, and access. A strong background in data analysis, systems redesign, and quality performance will be required for success. The DCOS will have supervisory responsibilities over one or more clinical services and must therefore have management and supervisory experience. S/he will serve as acting COS when the COS is not on site, and must have a strong commitment to ICARE values. The position is primarily administrative, however some degree of direct patient care in one's specialty (not to exceed 20%) is required. The incumbent also serves as professional liaison to other VA facilities, VISN-9, VACO, academic affiliates, and community stakeholders. S/he will promote constructive problem resolution in an environment of competing priorities. The incumbent monitors and promotes compliance with VA regulations, standards of TJC (The Joint Commission) and other regulatory bodies, and upholds ethical professional standards both personally and amongst staff
 

Some of the DCOS responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  

  • Demonstrates the ability to coordinate and integrate programs into a comprehensive package of       services to meet the needs of Veterans by participating in establishing policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure continuous comprehensive services.
  • Closely monitors SAIL and performance measure metrics and assists all clinical services in performance improvement activities with the goal being continuous improvement in the quality and safety of the clinical care provided.
  • Provides direct supervision over specific clinical services assigned by COS

  • Is responsible for oversight of Non-VA Purchased Care activities, consult management, timely clinical documentation, hospital flow, and other critical clinical practices that impact organizational efficiency and safety.

  • Works closely with Quality Management to create an environment of safety, assuring compliance with VA and Joint Commission standards, contributing to fact findings and quality/safety investigations, and participating in risk management activities (peer review, disclosures, RCA's, etc.).

  • Serves as Chair of the Clinical Practice Group, serves on other committees as assigned by COS, acts as COS designee, and participates in or chairs compensation panels and Professional Standards Board meeting.

  • Maintains specialty board certification, credentialing as a physician, and provides direct clinical care in his/her specialty as assigned by COS.

  • Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday8:00 am - 4:30 pm ; schedule can vary due to workload
