Duties

The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is recruiting for an Intermittent Temporary Not To Exceed (NTE) 1 year, experienced Physician - Emergency Medicine. The candidate will have significant accomplishments in clinical practice, educational activities, research or administration which clearly distinguish the physician as having the highest professional qualifications.  This position will be located in the Primary and Specialty Medicine Service Line and will report administratively and clinically to the Chief of Emergency Medicine.  Assignment to other areas within the service line and Medical Center may be required.  Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Physician is assigned patients to treat who check into the Emergency Department (ED). The Physician will work with patients, non-VA health care, specialists, assigned team members and Primary Care PACT to provide healthcare.
  • The Physician will work with the inpatient wards and non-VA facilities performing admissions and transfers. The Physician may also function in occupational health performing physicals and evaluations and treating employees for injuries.
  • Physician conducts the following:  prior record review; patient history, examination, diagnosis, treatment and education; documentation in progress note format; respond to Clinical Reminders; order appropriate lab tests and studies; interpretation and implementation of action from results of studies ordered; initiate and adjust medications as medically necessary to include medication refills; practice & maintain skills in EKG, rhythm strips.
  • Timely completion of electronic encounter for each patient encounter; timely electronic signature of electronic documents in medical record; oversight of emergency medical care; coordinates care for patients as appropriate between Mental Health, inpatient ward, Primary Care, community, and ancillary support clinics.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty for this position is intermittent on an as needed basis, including day and night shift rotations.  Additional information regarding the work schedule of this position will be discussed during the interview.
