The Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Hospital (Bedford VAMC) serves over 18,000 veterans annually throughout the state of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and surrounding states, and is affiliated with the Boston University School of Medicine. In addition to our mission of Primary Care, Mental Health and Long Term Care, we offer specialized medical care programs such as: Substance Abuse, Mental Health Intensive Case Management, Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center, Veterans Resource and Recovery Center, Comprehensive Work Therapy Program, Palliative Care, Geriatrics and Extended Care, and Home-Based Primary Care.

The hospital has the full continuum of mental health programming, including a number of nationally known exemplars in the areas of vocational services, peer services, housing services and outpatient mental health services. Programming is organized around a “recovery oriented” treatment philosophy, and the mental health service has been a national leader in psychosocial rehabilitation, programing research and education.

In addition to the main facility in Bedford, services are offered at three community-based outpatient clinics located in Gloucester, Haverhill, and Lynn, Massachusetts.  The hospital is currently authorized 461 Hospital Beds: 304 Community Living Beds, 50 Domiciliary Beds, 65 Hospital Beds, and 42 Transitional Housing Beds.

The Bedford VAMC is uniquely positioned with a significant research program that is supported by approximately $8 million in VA research funding, and is highly aligned with the clinical mission of the hospital and the VA.

Position is open for a thirty (30) day period and applicants will be reviewed and referred on a weekly basis. 


The VA Medical Center in Bedford, MA is looking for a full-time Geriatric Psychiatrist to join the team in our new Geropsychiatry Unit. Our hospital has a full spectrum of Mental Health treatment programs as well as a large Primary Care population and our philosophy emphasizes patient empowerment and recovery of function. Our strong academic affiliation is with Boston University School of Medicine, where a teaching appointment is encouraged. Our Psychiatry staff has low turnover and provides a welcoming collegial climate for learning and professional development. 

In this role, you will provide mental health evaluations, psychopharmacology, and brief psychiatric treatments to veterans in the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit and Community Living Centers. You will be an integral psychiatrist specialist for the interdisciplinary Geriatric Psychiatry Unit and psychiatry consultant to the CLC teams, including review of reports and treatment plans, consultation for colleagues as needed, and informing continual development of team procedures. Your duties will include:

  · Provides specialty modalities, mainly Geriatric Psychiatry 

  · Participates in other clinical duties as assigned by the Chief of Psychiatry

  · Implements and improves Emergency procedures

  · Provides individual supervision to support and educate staff, program team, and assigned trainees

  · Participates in facility or VISN committees in areas of personal expertise as requested

  · Contributes to an effective quality management system which includes process improvement; innovative

     system redesign, self-assessment, and peer review

  · Contributes consistently to evidence-based public health interventions such as screening and follow-up of

     medical and mental health conditions; and

  · Participates in the facility's academic mission, including participation in Grand rounds, teaching of medical

     students and psychiatry residents

WORK SCHEDULE:  Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm
