The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and nine community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

Duties

The Clinical Pathologist (Hematopathologist) works within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, at the Memphis VA Medical Center.  This Pathologist will work as a Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist (AP/CP) with subspecialty training in Hematopathology and will provide neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathology and cytopathology diagnoses, at the VA Medical Center Memphis, in order to meet the clinical needs of our Veterans.  The AP/CP Hematopathologist is expected to provide coverage for the following services: Surgical Pathology (providing 80% coverage for Hematopathology), Cytology, and Autopsy Services. Also, the Pathologist will provide coverage for Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine, in particular for Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine Service. 

Some of the functions are performed by AP/CP Hematopathologist's include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for overseeing the performance and interpretation of a variety of specialized procedures and possesses advance knowledge to resolve complex diagnostic problems.
  • Serves as an authority and subject matter expert to laboratory staff and medical staff when questions arise regarding problems with sample acquisition, interpretation of test results, or rationale for ordering or cancelling tests.
  • Ensures that sections within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine are in compliance with accrediting and regulatory agency requirements. The incumbent achieves these goals by establishing, coordinating and maintaining quality assurance programs. Additionally, the incumbent has advance knowledge to accurately interpret and provide technical guidance on a wide variety of internal and external agency policies and procedures.
  • Independently  chooses methods for achieving work goals, objectives, and time-management strategies. Responsibilities involve the development and implementation of new procedures and introduction and utilization of new products that will ultimately help provide more efficient and better patient care. The incumbent keeps abreast of current research, clinical methods, and technical advances in the field.
  • Actively participates in the educational program for the Service by developing in-service training and procuring continuing education lectures for residents and Laboratory personnel.

Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday8:00 am - 4:30 pm; schedule can vary due to workload
