    Responsibilities

    The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System is recruiting for staff psychiatrists to fill vacancies in our Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP). The staff psychiatrist provides clinical services providing direct patient care to scheduled and unscheduled patients and inpatients. Veterans treated come from a wide geographic area. Their healthcare and psychiatric problems and needs are complex. They require a high degree of clinical oversight and creative problem solving. Services are provided in a healthcare setting, inpatient, ambulatory, and in the community. Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Mastery of theories, principles, and methodologies underlying psychosocial practice.
    • Knowledge and understanding of developmental growth; dynamics of human behavior, family, and other social systems; and the impact of illness and disability on social functioning.
    • Ability to communicate with people who may be physically or mentally ill, uncooperative, fearful, emotionally distraught, and occasionally dangerous.
    • Knowledge of VHA directives, handbooks, and information letters; VISN policies and procedures; and facility policy and procedures.
    • Ability to develop, plan, implement and evaluate the interdisciplinary treatment plan, including provision of case management and/or services required in regards to discharge planning.
    • Assesses at risk factors and develops a preliminary disposition plan, involving the Veteran and the family/significant other. Performs insightful assessment of serious and complicated cases involving psychiatric illness, catastrophic medical conditions, dementia and other high risk diagnoses. Makes independent professional decisions and recommendations for agency action.
    • Develops comprehensive treatment plans in coordination with interdisciplinary team members, including goals, objectives and interventions clinical treatment. Makes adjustments to the treatment plan and interventions based on the changing needs, response to interventions and to improve outcomes.
    • Participates in the assignment of Veterans to treatment teams and programs. Consults with other specialists in planning treatment for Veterans with co-morbidities. Consults with urgent care, medical and specialty modules at VASNHS.
    • Provides individual, family and group therapy services in accordance with the needs identified in the assessment/plan. Possesses advanced skills in a variety of treatment modalities.
    • Has the ultimate responsibility for all entries into the patient's medical record (CPRS), and the timely completion thereof including discharge summaries and reports of examination or explanations.
    • Prescribes the appropriate psychotropic medications, general management of the patient, and requests for the appropriate consultations with other medical disciplines.
    Work Schedule: Various-This position may require nights, weekends, Holidays, extended shifts and on-call as necessary.
