The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and nine community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and sub specialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

The VAMC in Memphis is part of the VA MidSouth Healthcare Network, VISN 9, which includes facilities in Lexington and Louisville, KY; Huntington, WV; and Nashville and Mountain Home, TN.

The incumbent serves as a physician supervisor and serves as the leading psychiatrist in the Mental Health Service (MHS) Outpatient Mental Health Clinic and provides comprehensive clinical services to veterans and their families primarily in the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic at VAMC Memphis. The incumbent will perform general psychiatric assessment and treatment in a multi-disciplinary setting composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, nurses, physician extenders and a variety of rehabilitation/recovery therapists.

  • About 40% of Administrative/Supervisory Responsibilities. Has direct administrative and professional supervision of the following Psychiatric providers and physician extenders in the outpatient mental health clinic as well as other mental health disciplines as may become necessary for effective clinic functioning.
  •  The psychiatrist will support same-day access to mental health services for Veterans as deemed necessary by the service, in person and by telephone.
  • Ensures efficient operation of the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in MHS. Works closely with the Section Chief of Psychiatry and acts as the Section Chief of Psychiatry in his/her absence. Seeks additional resources as warranted, with use of data-driven criteria in support of all requests. Primary responsibility for all aspects of administration in the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic within MHS and in the relationship to the VA Medical Center at large.
  • Monitors and reports to Section Chief for Psychiatry with preparation and implementation oversight for any corrective actions necessary. Decisions are made exercising wide latitude and independent judgment.
  • Reports to the Section Chief of Psychiatry, and largely operates on a day-to-day basis in an independent manner, with full responsibility to keep the supervisor apprised of activities and any issues in need of close collaboration. Other duties can be stretch assignments as delegated to include time-limited assignments. About 60% of Clinical Responsibility.
  • Provides treatment for beneficiaries with general psychiatric disorders primarily in the inpatient setting but also in a variety of treatment settings, including telemental health. The incumbent may need to support outpatient clinics to support increased access to Veterans when necessary. 
  • Supports the essential components of the mental health programs that are to be implemented nationally, to ensure that all Veterans, wherever they obtain care in VHA, have access to needed mental health services per Uniform Mental Health Services directives. 
  • Supports the emergency department psychiatry duties while incumbent in the ED position is on leave or other absence. The incumbent will rotate on-call coverage with other Memphis VAMC psychiatrists and assist in cross coverage throughout the mental health service when other psychiatrists are on leave.
  • Provision of mental health treatment through Telehealth technology is considered a routine means of care delivery. Training modules will be completed within the first 60 days on duty. The required skills assessment will be completed at the first opportunity following completion of the training modules, as coordinated with the facility Telehealth Lead.
  • All providers will deliver mental health care via Telemental Health technology as part of their regular duties.
