This medical center operates 24 hours, seven days per week and you may be required to work days, evenings, nights, holidays, and/or weekends, to include modification in shifts and/or tours of duty, to meet medical center and patient care needs.

DUTIES:  

The VA Long Beach Healthcare System is actively recruiting for a Psychiatrist who will report to the Chief Mental Health Care Group. Our positions provide competitive remuneration and ample benefits. Both standard work weeks and compressed work weeks are possible.  VA Long Beach Healthcare System is affiliated with the University of California Irvine’s Medical School. Must be board certified/board eligible.  One of the following areas is being recruited for:

Mental Health Treatment Center -Our Mental Health Treatment Center (MHTC).  MHTC is a specialty clinic that provides services to patients who require urgent psychiatric care.  The clinicians at MHTC work closely with the Psychiatry Consult Service and will often assist with the care of patients requiring psychiatric intervention in the Emergency Room.  Candidates must possess excellent clinical skills and the ability to effectively triage patients and direct them to appropriate services.  Psychiatrists staffing MHTC will also have the opportunity to teach and supervise residents and medical students.

Psychiatric Consult Service-Our Psychiatric Consult Service provides evaluations and treatment recommendations to patients admitted to the medical center’s medical floors, surgical floors, nursing home, spinal cord rehabilitation unit, and emergency room.  The Consult staff will work closely with the Psychiatrists stationed in the Mental Health Treatment Center, which provides care for outpatients requiring urgent psychiatric care.  Candidates must possess excellent clinical skills and the ability to coordinate communication and treatment plans among several specialty services.   Psychiatrists on the Consult Service have the opportunity to teach and supervise residents and medical students

Primary Care – Mental Health Integration-Our Primary Care – Mental Health Integration bases Psychiatrists within Primary Care to act as consultants.  In addition to consults, the Psychiatrists perform evaluations and provide short term management of patients, including psychopharmacology and brief supportive psychotherapy.  These are patients who can typically transition their care to Primary Care Clinicians after brief stabilization.   Candidates must possess excellent clinical skills and the ability to communicate psychological concepts effectively to Primary Care Providers.  Psychiatrists staffing  Primary Care – Mental Health Integration also have the opportunity to teach and supervise residents and medical students.

NOTE :  PROVIDED FUNDING IS AVAILABLE, EXTERNAL CANDIDATES MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR EDUCATION DEBT REDUCTION PROGRAM (EDRP).  EDRP CANDIDATES MUST SUBMIT A COMPLETE AND ACCURATE EDRP APPLICATION AND SUPPORTING LOAN DOCUMENTATION WITHIN FOUR (4) MONTHS OF THEIR ENTRANCE ON DUTY (EOD) DATE.
