The VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) is the second busiest VA system in the nation and we are growing! Comprised of the Dallas VA Medical Center, Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic and Tyler VA Primary Care Clinic, VANTHCS is an integrated health care system with approximately 4,000 employees and over 1,600 volunteers and clinical trainees. VANTHCS also coordinates a Community Based Outpatient Clinic program throughout its 40-county primary service area to improve access to care for veterans throughout 38 North Texas and 2 in southern Oklahoma. Through these four distinctive facilities and relationships with other agencies, VANTHCS offers a continuum of health care services to a veteran population of approximately 500,000.  Housed on an 84-acre campus, Dallas VA Medical Center is the corporate headquarters for VANTHCS and serves as the tertiary referral center. Through its partnership with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (UT Southwestern), it also has emerged as a major teaching and medical research center. Primary care and multi-specialty outpatient clinics are also provided, making VANTHCS the second largest health care system based on number of patients seen.

Duties

A full-time position is available for the Medical Director of the Bonham Domiciliary.  Treatment programming is provided in the areas of substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and general domiciliary which provides psychosocial/vocational/medical rehabilitation services.  The position is physically located in the Bonham Domiciliary part of the VA North Texas Health Care System in Bonham, Texas.

Bonham Domiciliary Psychiatry Privilege Settings – Approved privileges for Bonham Domiciliary Service Physicians include performance at the Bonham Domiciliary, and receiving, reviewing, and acting upon consults and E-consults.

Core Privileges:  CORE:  Bonham Dom Service Psychiatry Core Privileges include:  admitting privileges, counseling – family, group, individual & marital, counseling and treatment of individuals with problems related to drug and alcohol abuse, diagnosis and treatment of mental conditions, family/marital therapy, group psychotherapy, history and physical, individual psychotherapy, initiating and monitoring of restraints, preparing treatment plans, prescribing Clozapine, psychopharmacotherapy, treatment and/or consulting of patients in long term care.

Other Privileges:  Prescribing buprenorphine.

Core responsibilities include leading and coordinating the operations of a large multidisciplinary residential team with a focus on uninterrupted high quality Veteran Centered care to Veterans. Incumbent monitors and ensures compliance with hospital policies, regulations, executive orders and management directives. Incumbent will collaborate with other teams/ team leaders to improve communication and to ensure ongoing continuity of care for Veterans.  Incumbent will supervise Staff Psychiatrist and RN Case Manager.

Incumbent must be skilled in addiction psychiatry, including diagnostic evaluations, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.  Incumbent should be competent in the management of individuals with a broad range of clinical problems, including mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, and geriatrics.  The incumbent is able to clarify and define problems and may suggest various possible approaches to the problems. The incumbent has responsibility for formulation of diagnosis, treatment program, and prognosis, particularly in the case of patients presenting unusual or difficult problems in these areas; ward management described as bed section, individual and group psychotherapy and somatic therapies.  Directs and supervises the treatment activities to provide a therapeutic climate suited to the psychological and physical needs of the patients.  Is skilled in the use of various diagnostic and treatment procedures, including prolonged intensive psychotherapy, relatively short-term supportive individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy and somatic therapies (including the use of drugs, insulin therapies, etc.). Incumbent is knowledgeable about the indication, contraindications, complications and techniques in the various treatment and diagnostic modalities, is responsible for the selection of cases for particular treatments and typically works with patients where the consequence of error in judgment may be of considerable magnitude.  Incumbent provides clinical consultation to all program staff and demonstrates professional judgment and expertise to make decisions about services and treatments provided to the Veterans.  Incumbent will supervise and mentor health care professionals.

The Bonham Domiciliary located in the VANTHCS provides a full range of residential mental health services including general adult psychiatry,  psychosomatic medicine, substance abuse sub-specialty services, trauma services, psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery programs, comprehensive homeless programs, peer support services, opiate replacement programs, and vocational rehabilitation programs.  Clinical training programs exist for medical students, psychiatry residents and fellows, clinical psychologists, social workers and nurses. VA North Texas Health Care System has an active relationship with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as our primary affiliate.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however, you may be required to work outside those hours, to include weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.
