The Staff Psychiatrist works primarily in any, or a combination of, the following settings: the Psychiatry Emergency Clinic (PEC), Tele-Mental Health Clinic and the Outpatient Mental Health Clinics at the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHCS).  This is a Staff Psychiatrist position (board eligible or board certified) in the Psychiatry Service of the Mental Health Care Line (MHCL).

The Psychiatry Service within the Mental Health Careline (MHCL) is located in the San Diego VA Medical Center (VAMC), a teaching hospital located adjacent to the University of California San Diego campus, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. It is a 256 bed, level 1a, tertiary care center that is dedicated to providing both primary and specialized outpatient health care, extended care, acute medical, surgical, intermediate and psychiatric care services with almost all major specialties and subspecialties represented. The facility has 38 acute psychiatric inpatient beds and 29 substance abuse rehabilitation beds.

Inpatient and outpatient care is available at the VAMC in La Jolla, while outpatient primary care services are available at the San Diego Mission Valley Outpatient Clinic and four other Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's) located in Oceanside, Escondido, Chula Vista, and El Centro, California. The VASDHS MHCL serves veterans who reside in San Diego and Imperial Counties and provides general and specialized inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services. Inpatient treatment includes general treatment for acute psychiatric problems and a specialized program for alcohol and drug problems.

The Medical Center is closely affiliated with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine. In collaboration with this affiliate, the VASDHS Psychiatry Service oversees the training of psychiatry residents, fellows in psychiatry subspecialties and third- and fourth-year medical students rotating through the inpatient and outpatient settings. Attending physicians are expected to obtain and maintain UCSD faculty appointments, and may participate broadly in the teaching mission of the University. The Psychiatry Service is also committed to the advancement of knowledge and health care practices with member physicians playing a vital leadership role in basic science, clinical and health services research.  The responsibilities of this position will include the provision of clinical psychiatric services for the treatment of substance use disorders.

The psychiatrist works primarily as a Staff Psychiatrist in any of the following: the Psychiatric Emergency Clinic (PEC), Tele-mental health clinic, and any of the outpatient Mental Health Clinics at VAMC San Diego. The psychiatrist will provide a full continuum of evidence based psychiatric services; including screenings, formal psychiatric assessments, consultation, individual and group treatment, and psycho-education. The psychiatrist should have advanced knowledge of the treatment required by both chronic and acute psychiatric patients; the ability to facilitate referrals to other programs; the ability to coordinate care with other physicians, and work in a multidisciplinary team, etc.

The psychiatrist may also be required to spend some time using tele-psychiatry to conduct individual appointments with patients. The psychiatrist will rotate with other physicians on a roster for evening and weekend coverage of mental health programs.

The psychiatrist may participate in education and training of psychiatry residents, medical students, psychology interns, and allied health trainees. He/she may participate in research projects. Depending on fluctuating staffing patterns and workloads, the psychiatrist may be assigned to other programs within Psychiatry Service.

Work Schedule: This is a FULL-TIME position. The work schedule will be discussed during the interview process.  Weekend, holiday, and overtime work may be required to meet patient needs.
