    Summary

    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    Responsibilities

    As an armed officer with prescribed powers of arrest for violations of federal offenses the VA Police Officer's primary responsibility is to maintain law and order through the enforcement of federal criminals codes and Veterans Administration regulations originating in federal statutes in the physical protection of patients, members, visitors and employees; the protection of property of the United States government and personal property on Medical Center grounds, the protection of the civil rights of all individuals while on federally owned property; and in the preservation of the peaceful environment requisite to the operation of medical treatment programs.
    Employs police skills while conduction vigorous foot and vehicle patrol of medical center buildings and grounds observing all activity occurring during their assigned tour-of-duty and is constantly alert to acts of a suspicious nature which may result in theft, burglary, pilferage, assault, or other serious crimes.
    Observes, stops and questions suspicious persons authoritatively and tactfully to determine the nature of their business and to provide appropriate direction or control.
    Immediately responds to calls or alarms involving crimes in progress or just discovered, conducts a crime scene assessment, intervenes to abort the criminal act and performs apprehensions, restraints or arrests subduing individuals when necessary using a minimum application of physical force and weapon employment as prescribed in established agency policy.
    Conducts preliminary and short-term investigations, taking charge of accident or crime scenes, restricting access, seeking, detecting and protecting evidence and witnesses.
    Performs traffic patrol, enforces speed limits, parking violations and pedestrian right-of-way rules.
    Responds to disturbances in progress, subduing individuals who may present a threat to themselves or others, using only the amount of physical force necessary and weapon employment as prescribed.
    At times, performs dispatcher duties involving passing of directions and information to officers on patrol assignments, coordinating emergency responses, and receiving and acting on calls concerning report of violations or complaints.
    Is prepared to testify in Courts of Law as arresting officer or witness.
    Maintains a high degree of physical condition, care for and wear of the uniform in accordance with established procedures and keeps abreast of law enforcement and appropriate medical center regulations.

    Work Schedule: Rotating shifts, Monday to Sunday, weekends and holidays
