    The Department of Veteran Affairs Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS) is an integrated health care delivery system, offering a comprehensive array of medical, surgical, rehabilitative, mental health and extended care to veterans in Northern California.  The health system is comprised of a medical center in Sacramento; a rehabilitation and extended care facility in Martinez; outpatient clinics in Martinez, Fairfield, Oakland, Sacramento, McClellan, Redding, Chico, and Vallejo; a Substance Abuse Treatment Center in Oakland; and dental clinics in Vallejo, Sacramento and Redding.

    Responsibilities

    The VA Northern California Health Care System is currently recruiting a full-time, board prepared/board certified Psychiatrist in the Outpatient Behavioral Health Services at the Chico VA Outpatient Clinic in Chico, CA. The Psychiatrist conducts history, mental status exams, and occasional brief physical exams; completes assessments and formulates diagnosis; develops treatment plans; and orders labs and/or radiological assessments for a wide variety of mental disorders, through a multidisciplinary team approach.   The psychiatrist is responsible for the medication management for patients as indicated in the treatment plan as well as facilitation of medication support groups, evaluating and providing medical clearance for patients presenting to the clinic who may need psychiatric hospitalization, and assessment and intervention for patients presenting in crisis.

    Interested applicants may also be considered for the clinic manager position of the Chico and Yuba City mental health clinics.  The position is 20% administrative, involves the supervision of a total of 13 employees, and reports to the associate chief of staff for mental health of the Northern California Health Care System.  The manager oversees the operation of the mental health clinics; everyday tasks include such things as assignments of consults to the service, approval of leave requests, implementing department policies, and occasional data gathering.  He or she participates in the hiring of new employees, writes performance evaluations, and assists in writing position descriptions.  As part of both the local Chico management council as well as the NCHCS mental health leadership, opportunities are available for participation in committees and other projects.

    Drug Testing:  This is a testing designated position.  All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing position are subject to urinalysis to screen for drug use prior to appointment.  Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with the VA.  Applicants who test positive for illegal use of drugs will not be appointed.
