    Responsibilities

Clinical work for this position includes providing individual and group mental health and behavioral medicine brief interventions, as well as mental health crisis management interventions as required within the primary care setting. Clinical work occurs as part of interdisciplinary teams. Services provided by the successful candidate involve diagnosis, assessment, consultation, and psychological interventions that incorporate relevant evidence-based practices, including motivational interviewing, integrated primary care, and cognitive behavioral therapies. Common targeted problem areas include depression, bereavement, anxiety, PTSD, and substance misuse. Services also address smoking cessation, chronic pain, treatment adherence, and risk behaviors as part of disease prevention and chronic disease management (e.g., weight loss and management, tobacco use cessation, promoting patient self-management interventions targeting issues such as increasing participation in regular exercise, healthy eating, sleep hygiene). Psychologists have scheduled appointments with Veterans and also receive same-day referral of patients by warm handoffs from primary care providers.

In addition, the successful candidate will teach and supervise pre-doctoral interns and post-doctoral fellows who seek specialized training in clinical health psychology and integrated care within our American Psychological Association APA-accredited VA Connecticut Healthcare System Internship and Post-doctoral Residency Programs.
