    Summary

    The VA Central Iowa Health Care System provides a full continuum of care between the Des Moines campus and our Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC’s) and is one of the Medical Centers that make up the VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23). Employee selected may be expected to perform duties at other duty sites within VA Central Iowa Health Care System based on the needs of the organization.

    Responsibilities

    Registered Nurse - Acute Mental Health Unit

    The Registered Nurse assigned to 3A (Acute Mental Health), is a professional nurse with a broad-based clinical knowledge that enables him/her to effectively provide psychiatric nursing care to a Veteran population with widely diverse mental health diagnosis and symptoms. The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. The Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process when assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting individualized nursing plan of care.  The Acute Mental Health (inpatient psychiatry) setting involves the most intensive mental health care, and is reserved for acutely ill patients who are at high risk for harming themselves or others, or are unable to care for their basic needs. This treatment is often short-term.  Common duties include, but are not limited to:

    ·  Provides specialized nursing care to acutely ill patients with a multitude of diagnoses.

    ·  Draws on psychiatric nursing knowledge base to provide interventions consistent with health team plans and projected optimal outcomes.

    ·  Recognizes emergency situations and demonstrates effective action in emergencies.

    ·  Administers medications and procedures as established in policies and guidelines.

    ·  Assures detailed, current and comprehensive documentation is contained in the patient medical record and other pertinent records.

    ·  Utilizes appropriate resources to provide efficient and effective patient care.

    ·  Functions independently and demonstrates the ability to assign, organize, and delegate assessed needs to other members of the interdisciplinary team and peers.

    ·  Influences care outcomes, coordinating and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to provide quality care based on established standards, policies, and procedures.

    ·  Demonstrates excellent communication skills in communicating with patient, family, co-workers and interdisciplinary team members. Ensures excellent customer service.

    Work Schedule: 12hr shifts, (7:30am - 8:00pm) OR (7:30pm-8:00am) OR 8hr shifts, (3:30pm-midnight), rotating weekends and holidays
