    The GI Endoscopy RN provides care for the Veteran in a Gastroenterology Lab. The GI Endoscopy RN cares for patients requiring inpatient or outpatient procedures for diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal conditions and the administration of moderate sedation. The most commonly seen diagnoses include Hemocult Positive Stool, Anemia, Rectal Bleeding, Dysphasia, Dyspepsia, GERD, Barrett's Esophagus, Upper GI Bleed, Lower GI Bleed, Liver Dysfunctions/ Disorders, Pancreatic Disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and GI malignancies. The GI Endoscopy RN provides care to the Veteran undergoing a variety of procedures and included are: Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, PEG Placement, Paracentesis, Upper Endoscopy, ERCP and EUS. The GI Endoscopy RN demonstrates leadership and mastery of practice in delivering efficient, comprehensive, and continuous patient-driven holistic care through active collaboration, communication and coordination of resources. He/she will function as a charge nurse to assume responsibility for patient care and patient flow of the Gastroenterology Lab on an assigned tour of duty. The GI endoscopy RN will participate in the emergency On-Call program per policy for the GI Service. Duties Include but not limited too:

    • Care of the Veteran undergoing GI procedures
    • Administration of moderate sedation
    • Patient assessment and Pre-procedure preparation
    • Intraprocedure monitoring
    • Technical assistance with endoscopic procedures
    • Post procedure/recovery care and monitoring
    • Discharge teaching and education of patient/family
    • Outpatient medication reconciliation
    • Pre and post procedure telephone contact with patient/family
    • Completion of GI specific competency's
    • Competent in the operation and care are of GI equipment
    • RME competency for specific GI equipment
    • Documentation as required on Procedure Sedation Form and EMR
    • Participation in quality improvement activities
    • Participate in unit education activities
    • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings
    • Participate in emergent procedure on-call program

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, Shift coverage between hours 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with rotating call to cover nights, weekends, and holidays.
