    The St. Louis VAMC is a full-service health care facility providing inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation, as well as over 65 subspecialty areas. It is a two-division facility that serves veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois.

    The John Cochran Division has all of the medical center's operative surgical capabilities, the ambulatory care unit, and a six-story Clinical Addition that includes surgical facilities, intensive care units, outpatient psychiatry clinics, and expanded laboratory.

    The Jefferson Barracks Division provides psychiatric treatment, regional spinal cord injury treatment, a nursing home care unit, geriatric health care, rehabilitation services, and a rehabilitation domiciliary program for homeless veterans.

    Responsibilities

    The duty station is the John Cochran Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on the needs of the medical center. This position is in the bargaining unit. This announcement may be used to fill identical positions vacated within 90 days of any selections made from the original announcement.

    The incumbent for this position may be eligible to apply for the Education Debt Reduction Program. Please contact Human Resources at this medical center and speak with the Education Debt Reduction Program Coordinator for additional information.

    A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized with a 2 year service obligation agreement.

    FUNCTION:

    Effectively uses the nursing process to care for patients with varying diagnosis. Develops skills to successfully assess and care for patients with end stage renal disease. This includes, but is not limited to hemodialysis and continuous peritoneal dialysis. Works with the interdisciplinary team to plan care and educate patients with renal disease. The incumbent is self-directed and can guide and evaluate support staff.

    DUTIES:

    The Hemodialysis nurse performs primary nursing duties for kidney disease patients, such as carrying out routine nursing assessments, determining risk factors that may affect the patient, educating the patient on his or her treatment, starting and monitoring dialysis, and administering transfusions where required. During dialysis, the nurse also checks on the function of the machine, the patient's vital signals, and ends the procedure at the appropriate time. For patients who require dialysis in their own homes, such as bed-ridden patients, the dialysis nurses are responsible for training other staff or family members in the proper usage of the dialysis machines and safety protocols. They also provide nursing support for patients both before and after renal transplantation, and determine dietary and medication requirements. More complex cases require the dialysis nurse to initiate end-of-life care and acute dialysis procedures, as well as working with multidisciplinary nursing and medical professionals. Work well independently and with a multidisciplinary team to care for the chronic and acute ESRD patient.

    Work Schedule: Applicant can work either 8 or 12 hour duty schedules; unit is open Monday - Saturday. however, the incumbent will be expected to be available for 24-hour on-call duty as needed.
