    The VA St Louis is a full-service health care facility providing inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation, as well as over 65 subspecialty areas. It is a two-division facility that serves veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois.

    The John Cochran Division has all of the medical center's operative surgical capabilities, the ambulatory care unit, and a six-story Clinical Addition that includes surgical facilities, intensive care units, outpatient psychiatry clinics, and expanded laboratory.
     
    The Jefferson Barracks Division provides psychiatric treatment, regional spinal cord injury treatment, a nursing home care unit, geriatric health care, rehabilitation services, and a rehabilitation domiciliary program for homeless veterans.
     
    The St. Louis VA Medical Center is associated with Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Belleville, IL; O'Fallon, MO (St. Charles County); and St. Louis, MO (North St. Louis County); and Washington, MO.

    Responsibilities

    The duty station is the John Cochran Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on the needs of the medical center.  This position is in the bargaining unit.  This announcement may be used to fill identical positions vacated within 90 days of any selections made from the original announcement.

    Responsibilities/Duties:

    The Infection Prevention Registered Nurse (IP RN) reports directly to the Associate Director Patient Care Services.  The incumbent is responsible for clinical and administrative processes of the Infection Prevention Program.  The IP RN is responsible for the planning, organizing, developing, managing, and evaluating the day to day operations.  The incumbent will assure that all program elements are implemented to support the patient care needs in a safe, efficient and timely manner that meets acceptable standards of care and expectations of VHA directives and Handbooks, accreditation standards and regulations.   

    Duties include but are not limited to::

    1.     Serves in capacity of consultant to administrative and clinical staff providing structure and maintenance of the Infection Prevention Program in order to accomplish quality patient care in the most cost effective manner.

    2.     Coordinates administrative and surveillance functions of infection prevention and control, supports continuous improvement in patient care, organizational functions and major structures with important functions: VA mandated programs, accreditation standards, and other external requirements.

    3.     Promotes the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations

    5.     Develops, implements, maintains and evaluates facility wide programming for Infection Prevention program.

    6.     Conducts an annual organizational risk assessment to direct surveillance and infection control program priorities and strategies.

    7.     Utilizes sound epidemiological principles in conducting surveillance and investigation of infections.

    8.     Provides consultation and guidance on infection risk, prevention and control strategies.

    9.     Develops and provides source educational materials and education programs.

    10.  Serves as a resource to staff, patients and families related to Infection Prevention and Control.

    11.  Collects and analyzes infection data.

    12.  Initiates interventions according to direct improvements in organizational practices, the environment of care, and patient care outcomes.

    13.  Monitors key components of program for compliance with established performance guidelines.

    14.  Maintains data records and correspondence pertinent to Infection Prevention and Control programming and assigned clinical reviews.

    15.  Conducts systematic reviews of clinical processes as assigned.

    16.  Identifies opportunities to improve the Infection Prevention and Control Program.

    17.  Reduces health-care acquired infections and employee risks to improve customer service.

    18.  Demonstrates commitment to safety and highest quality of care and the ability to lead programs and/or teams
