    Summary

    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    Responsibilities

    This position is located at the West Haven Campus in the Operations Section of Police Service. Incumbent initiates and accomplishes a variety of complex duties. The incumbent serves as a Parking Lot Attendant. He/she is the access control person for the particular area assigned. The incumbent initiates and accomplishes a variety of complex communications duties such as monitoring and directing all traffic of vehicles and pedestrians on to the Campus Parking Lots; and initiates calls of assistance to Police Officers for emergencies. The incumbent's primary duties are the control of traffic, the provision of assistance for citizens in emergency situations, including the protection of personnel and V A owned or controlled property. Their presence serves as a deterrent to infractions of regulations, and they are expected to maintain order, enforce parking and traffic regulations and until relieved, take charge in cases of emergency.

    · Monitoring of all parking areas and roadways ensuring that only authorized personnel utilize VA parking lots as assigned or posted.

    · Distinguishes and properly parks vehicles of VIP's, Handicapped Veterans, visitors, etc. in those parking areas so designated.

    · Recognizes differences in "normal" and "deviant" behavior.

    · Independently conducts foot security patrols and/or vehicle security patrol for a prescribed security patrol area over the course of a regular shift.

    · Responds to calls or Alarm's involving crimes in progress or just discovered to assist victims or those in need.

    · Assists victims of accidents or assaults by providing first aid, and/or calling for medical assistance, or assists in transporting to a specific location for medical treatment.

    · Gives out crime prevention information and advice during security patrols and when in contact with individuals.

    · Directs traffic, ensuring normal traffic flow, especially during congested times such as shift change and when an accident has occurred; detects speeding vehicles, quickly notifying the on duty Police to safely stop them, and taking appropriate notification actions.

    · Controlling personnel access by monitoring the identification of individuals entering VA controlled property.

    · Referring person who lack proper credentials to the appropriate control point in order to obtain proper identification.

    · Reports fire and safety hazards, detected and takes immediate action to extinguish or control fires discovered and to temporarily correct unsafe conditions' during fire, storm, or other emergencies to assist persons to safety areas, takes prompt action to evacuate persons from dangerous areas.

    · Incumbent may be required to work during non-normal working hours during times of emergency, holiday functions, or other VIP events requiring parking attendant assistance.
