About Indianapolis VA Medical Center: Provides acute inpatient medical, surgical, psychiatric, neurological, and rehabilitation care, as well as both primary and specialized outpatient services. Some noteworthy specialized services include comprehensive cardiac care, radiation oncology treatment and community based extended care. The medical center operates three Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's) located in Bloomington, Indiana, Terre Haute, Indiana and Martinsville, IN. The more than 61,000 patients (3,700 women Veterans) treated by the Indianapolis VA Medical Center require over 657,000 outpatient visits and over 7,900 inpatient episodes of care yearly. Duties

This position will serve as the Chief of Staff at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. The Chief of Staff (COS) is the chief medical officer at the facility. 

The COS reports to the Medical Center Director and is a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), collaborating with the Associate Director, the Associate Director for Patient Care Services, the Assistant Director and the Deputy COS.  In addition, the incumbent is an active participant at the VISN level and collaborates regularly with VISN 10 leadership which includes the VISN Network Director, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Quality Management Officer, and other VISN 10 officials.  The COS also regularly collaborates with other VISN 10 Chiefs of Staff.

Functions/Responsibilities

1. The COS is responsible for the management and operation of all clinical programs and services offered in the medical center, including Ambulatory Care, Anesthesiology, Compensation and Pension, Dental, Medicine, Neurology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Psychiatry and Mental Health, Physical Medicine and Rehab, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Research and Development (including the Health Sciences Research & Development [HSR&D] Center of Excellence), and Surgery Services. In addition, the COS has administrative responsibility for Credentialing and Privileging, Learning Resources, Quality Management, and Systems Redesign. 

2. The COS is responsible for the enforcement of the Medical Staff Bylaws and all associated attachments and rules. The incumbent promotes standards of clinical competence and conduct for clinical staff. The COS maintains standards through compliance with credentialing and privileging and the monitoring and evaluating of clinical practice and performance.

3. The COS works closely with the Associate COS for Research & Development and the Chief of HSR&D to foster the medical center's research program and to assist in meeting Research compliance guidelines. The incumbent serves as a member on the Research and Development Executive Committee

4. The COS will determine goals, priorities and direction for the clinical Services and ensure the implementation of local, VISN and national policies. The incumbent will conduct regular meetings to keep staff abreast of all clinical decisions, policies, procedures, goals, and priorities and will foster ethical decision-making. Emphasis will be placed on quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and providing cost-effective/efficient services to the medical center's Veterans and customers.  

5. The COS serves as an active participant on many committees throughout the medical center, on the School of Medicine campus, in the community, and at the VISN and national level.  The following is a sample of the meetings:

This position is predominantly administrative, but the incumbent will have up to15% of their time in a clinical role consistent with their training and specialty.
