The staff psychiatrist will be located in one of the following clinics: the Audie L. Murphy Hospital, Frank Tejeda Outpatient Clinic, North Central Federal Clinic, Shavano Park Outpatient Clinic, Balcones Heights Outpatient Clinic, South Bexar Outpatient Clinic.  Depending on other activities, sufficient time must be allotted to teaching, research, and administrative duties, as appropriate.

DUTIES:

GENERAL DUTY DESCRIPTION: Psychiatry Service Staff Physicians provide comprehensive care for patients who have illnesses within the scope of Psychiatric Medicine. In addition to patient care, the psychiatrist may have responsibilities in other areas, such as educational and research.

Clinical duties include providing primary, secondary, and tertiary care in both hospitalized and outpatient settings, identifying patients' mental and medical health problems and designing diagnostic and therapeutic plans to meet these needs. The physician will be responsible for coordinating activities of other health service personnel, resolving problems affecting patient care and providing appropriate education for the patient and/or family members regarding the patient's care, patient's illnesses and its management. The position may require providing care through telehealth services and also may require performing compensation and pension exams as demands dictate. Tele-mental health assessments and treatment may be provided by telework. The care provided is to comply with clinical practice guidelines as measured by the External Peer Review Program and the Clinical Reminder reports.

 

The staff physician is responsible for teaching house staff, medical students and other health professionals during ward rounds, clinics and in conferences and providing supervisory control and professional direction. As required, he/she will provide consultations throughout the medical center and compensation and pension examinations, and tele-mental health assessments and treatment. As required, will cover other duties as assigned to include holidays, weekends, evening hours and on-call coverage.

 

Physicians whose responsibilities include leadership and administration will be responsible for: enforcement of STVHCS polices, rules and regulations , and of the Medical Staff Bylaws; to provide leadership in the application of clinical practice to organizational processes and/or systems improving outcomes at the service level; to achieve excellent customer satisfaction; to assure compliance with clinical practice guidelines and to work collaboratively with others; to create a system to promote state-of-the-art acute, chronic and preventive mental health care; for performance improvement process; to keep abreast of changes as appropriate; and to serve on committees as assigned. Also, those leaders who are involved in teaching programs and research are responsible to provide an environment supportive of education, training and research. Participate in the Peer Review process.

 

In addition, all physicians must meet the following qualifications:

Administrative Duties include, but are not limited to, Leadership responsibilities; HR; Staff Management; Time/Leave Management and Clinical Management.

Clinical Duties include, but are not limited to, Patient Care; Medical/Clinical Knowledge; Clinical Judgment; Interpersonal& Communication Skills; Professionalism and Systems-Based Practice.

Education/Teaching Duties: Practitioners are expected to show effectiveness in teaching, monitoring, and coordinating educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision requirements.

Research Duties, (if applicable): Physician researchers will show an ability to identify and define significant Research and Development problems, to plan and execute a precise research program, and to generate effective reports and results worthy of publication. Researchers are responsible for oversight of any research staff that they supervise.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements:  

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • First-Year Residency (Internship)

     

Preferred Experience:

1. Board certified or working toward board certification in Psychiatry.

2. Four year accredited Psychiatry Resident Program.

3. Basic Life Support (BLS).
