Duties

The Staff Psychologist will develop, implement, and document the psychotherapeutic treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients, including prompt completion of clinical reminders. The Staff Psychologist will function independently as a member of the El Paso VAHCS Medical Staff, with full clinical privileges and assume complete professional responsibility for his/her clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions, and documentation.

Clinical Responsibilities for each program area within Mental Health Services:

  • Substance Abuse 

- Provides a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental disorders, particularly for those persons diagnosed with substance use disorders.
-Provides education to patients, family members, and significant others.
-Provides comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, family, and group psychotherapy.
-Provides consultation to professional staff within the El Paso VAHCS and to community providers, concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate treatment plans for patients with substance use disorders

  • General Mental Health

-Provides a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental disorders, particularly for complex or unusually difficult patients.
-Provides education to patients, family members, and significant others.
-Conducts cognitive evaluations and screenings for Veterans referred.
-Conducts diagnostic and neurobehavioral histories and interviews, as well as psychological and personality assessment, of Veterans referred.
-Provides individual, group, and family psycho-educational service.
-Provides training, didactics, and supervision to psychiatry residents, psychology and other trainees, and fellows.
-Provides comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, family, and group psychotherapy to those utilizing mental health services.
-Provides consultation to professional staff within EPVAHCS and to community providers, concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate treatment plans for patients.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Clinical Team 

-Provides a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental disorders, particularly for those persons diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
-Conducts cognitive evaluations and screenings for Veterans referred to TBI team.
-Conducts diagnostic and neurobehavioral histories and interviews, as well as psychological and personality assessment, of Veterans referred to the TBI team.
-Provides education on TBI to internal and external sources as requested.
-Provides individual, group, and family psycho-educational service to TBI team referrals.
-Provides comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, family, and group psychotherapy.
-Provides consultation to professional staff within the El Paso VAHCS and to community providers, concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate treatment plans for patients with PTSD.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:45pm
