Job Summary:  The Chief of Chaplain Service is under the direct supervision of the Associate Director for Patient Care Services. The Chief of Chaplain Service is responsible for managing, directing, and supervising day-to-day operations of Chaplain Service. The Chief Chaplain directly supervises all Staff Clinical Chaplains and administrative staff.  The Chief Chaplain responsible for effective leadership in developing and carrying out the medical center's programs of religious, spiritual, and clinical pastoral care for persons of all faith groups.

The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is a psychiatric care facility with acute and chronic psychiatric patients, Substance Abuse Treatment Program/clinics, a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Unit, inpatient medical unit, Palliative Care Unit, Community Living Center, Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Benton Harbor, Lansing, and Muskegon, and the Wyoming Health Care Center.  Duties include:

  •  Providing care as a part of inter-disciplinary teams in several highly-specialized areas of medical care including substance abuse treatment, nursing home care, post-traumatic stress, palliative care/ hospice, psychiatry, medical care unit, and outpatient clinics. 
  • Effectively providing leadership, religious program development, planning and coordination of all spiritual and pastoral care at this Medical Center. 
  • Assuring that all Veteran patients have opportunities for free exercise of religion and that they are protected from all forms of proselytizing. 
  • Scheduling tour of duty for all Staff Clinical Chaplains.
  • Providing continued program development.
  • Preparing and submitting of all administrative reports, action items and document preparation required of the service. 
  • Protecting from proselytizing by staff, other Veteran patients, or visitors, regardless of faith group.
  • Communicating effectively with persons of diverse races, cultures, religions, nationalities, ages, and persons having varying types and degrees of disability to understand and address their specific needs.
  • Documenting Veteran patient's assessments, treatment, and ministry in paper and /or electronic records systems as assigned.
