    The Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center, located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is a complexity level 2 teaching hospital which provides a full range of patient care services. The medical center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as the computerized medical record and tele-radiology. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary and tertiary care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, hematology and nephrology. Additionally, geriatrics and extended care services are offered including long term care, telemedicine, respite, dementia, rehabilitation, hospice, transitional care and a variety of home care services.

    Responsibilities

    This position serves as the Supervisory Medical Record Administrator (MRA), Chief, Health Information Management (CHIM) of Business Office and Health Administration Service (BOHAS) at the Wilkes-Barre, VAMC. Supervisory Medical Record Administrators (Chief HIM) are delegated full program management and supervisory responsibility to direct professional (MRA), technical (MRT), and other support staff in medical health information work. The MRA in this assignment provides highly technical advice, planning, and evaluation about health information management issues impacting the overall program on a regular and recurring basis.

    • Responsible for the administrative management of health records, which includes planning, managing, advising, and directing the health information program in accordance with applicable Federal laws, facility by-laws, VHA policy, The Joint Commission standards, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and other regulatory and accrediting agencies.
    • Responsible for all facets of health records management for the facility ensuring maintenance of complete, accurate, timely, clinically-pertinent, and readily-accessible patient health records, which contain sufficient recorded information to serve as a basis to plan patient care, support diagnoses, warrant treatment, measure outcomes, support education and facilitate performance improvement processes and legal requirements.
    • Must assure that all health information that is coded and abstracted meets the requirements of the VA and/or The Joint Commission and is consistent with professional health records standards.
    • Must provide detailed technical expertise in health records science and other very technical aspects of health information and maintains all health information input into the local VistA database and assures timely transmission of that data into all VA centralized databases.
    • MRA is a key advisor to the Chief of Staff, Executive Management, and clinicians and is responsible for providing technical guidance on health information issues such as documentation requirements, liability issues, advance directives, informed consent, patient privacy and confidentiality, etc.
    • MRA is responsible for leading the automation of all health information systems, working closely with Information Technology (IT) and Clinical Informatics, guiding the automation of health record documentation, health record tracking, and physician incomplete record tracking.
    • The CHIM at this level has the full complement of HIM supervisory responsibility including coding, scanning, release of information, transcription, health information technicians, ward administration and clinical documentation specialists which consists of a mixture of Hybrid Title 38 and Title 5 positions.
    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
