    Responsibilities

    Clinical Responsibilities:
    Incumbent has full supervisory responsibility for a staff of non-supervisory personnel Occupational Therapists support personnel, trainees and others in the delivery or support of services in the Hampton VA Medical Center, outpatient clinics, nursing home care unit, spinal cord injury ward, general medicine and surgical wards, domiciliary care, psychiatry wards, and ambulatory care facility.

    • Assesses plans and evaluates the delivery of Occupational Therapy, utilizing personal experience and findings from current research and/or studies;
    • Serves as a consultant to other facility personnel in evaluating and planning occupational therapy, treatment and assistance for the most complex cases;
    • Resolves problems that interfere with the delivery of Occupational Therapy;
    • Applies current concepts and findings from research and/or studies to practice, sharing clinical expertise with professional and supportive Occupational Therapy;
    • Directs the Occupational Therapy Quality Assurance Program, designing activities that detect deficiencies in patient treatment and providing solutions for deficiencies in structure, process and outcome of all Occupational Therapy services;
    • Promotes the utilization of Occupational Therapy in the Hampton VAMC and in the community;
    • Provides direct patient care including:
      • Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care to achieve goals which are recognized by patient and treatment teams in rehabilitation;
      • Implements occupational therapy procedures based on comprehensive knowledge of new concepts, research and experience for optimal patient care;
      • Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability in performing and providing complex procedures in acute care, long term care, outpatient settings including ADL assessments, wheelchair assessments and interventions to address all of the above;
      • Provides innovative and creative solutions to complex problems related to all aspects of occupational therapy;
      • Initiates communication promptly with other team members, advising them of the patient's needs, progress and discharge planning information regarding rehabilitation of patients with acute medical, surgical, and chronic diseases;
      • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary health care teams to modify the plan of care to meet the patient's individual needs;
      • Attends and participates in ward rounds/team meetings and other patient presentations;
      • Establishes realistic, measurable and time-framed short and long term goals for each patient, and documents in the patient's medical record;
      • Serves as a role model to the new graduates and other rehabilitation therapists;
      • Provides educational material, training and community resources to patients, families and care takers to increase the patient's ability to function in a home or other appropriate environment, and documents it in the medical record;
      • Works directly with Infection Control Program to provide better care to the patients in rehabilitation;
      • Serves as a consultant to nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, and other allied health care workers in the medical center.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.


    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am. to 4:30 p.m., maybe required to work an alternative tour
