    The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a sixty-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC).It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level 1 Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a fifty three county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent serves as the Section Chief of Medical Services for the Mental Health Service (MHS) at the Memphis VAMC. The incumbent will provide oversight of all psychiatric and medical care in the mental health service. He/she will directly supervise all staff serving the Acute Mental Health Units, Psychiatry Training Officers, Psychiatrists providing specialty services, Psychiatrists serving the emergency room and other consultations. In the future, he/she may supervise psychiatrists and physician extenders in the outpatient clinic.

    Other duties include but are not limited to:

    • Develops and implements programs, policies, and procedures to meet program goals, VHA policy and external accreditation requirements.
    • Monitors outcomes using data-driven quality assurance processes, and implement strategies for improvement based on data analysis.
    • Ensures adequate coverage of psychiatric services, approves or disapproves leave for staff they supervise, prepares data for OPPE, peer review, and credentialing & privileging as appropriate.
    • Communicates clear expectations of staff and manages variations from expectations with corrective actions as needed.
    • Completes all hiring processes, performance appraisals and boarding processes for his/her staff.
    • Responsible for timely reporting of program information at a local, VISN and/or National level as requested.
    • Consults with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues and serves as a subject matter expert to other medical center staff in the area of psychiatry.
    • Incumbent performs limited crisis/risk assessment, triage, medication management, interventional medicine and brief therapy services in inpatient and outpatient settings.
    • Provides treatment for Veterans with a variety of psychological, medical, mood and personality disorders.

    Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (8:00am - 4:30pm) On call may be required after 4:30pm and on weekends/holidays.
