The William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center (VAMC) opened in 1932 at its current location. Dorn VAMC has 204 skilled nursing beds, which includes acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, and long-term care. The hospital provides primary, secondary, and some tertiary care.

Dorn VAMC is a complex teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, education, and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, cardiology, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care.

Dorn VAMC is accredited by The Joint Commission and by the American College of Surgeons and the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities. Laboratory and Pathology services are accredited by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists.

Columbia, South Carolina, is a wonderful place to live and work. Duties

The Critical Care Physician will report to the Chief, Surgery Service

  • Additional duties include compliance with all medical center policies and procedures and participation on medical center committees.
  • The physician will work closely with other departments and service lines including but not limited to Education, Medicine, and Research.
  • The incumbent would work in the ICU providing expert care for critically ill patients. In addition, the Physician would rotate with the other Critical Care Physician in providing expert consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Clinic, and inpatient setting.  In this role, the incumbent will provide feedback and patient education to the patients and their families and demonstrate excellence in all facets of patient care and meet or exceed compliance standards.
  • He or she will perform:  Evaluate, diagnose, treat, consult, and order appropriate diagnostic studies for Critical Care patients. The ideal candidate should be proficient at bronchoscopies, intubations, and other procedures frequently performed by Critical Care Physicians.  The incumbent would on occasion precept residents and provide daily consultative services and feedback.
  • Incumbent will provide consultative services on patients referred from other sections of the hospital and/or affiliated VA outpatient clinics, and perform administrative functions and other tasks as assigned by the Chief of Surgery Service. The incumbent is expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and treatment of disease. The ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team. The incumbent is expected to adhere to stated policies and agency mandates and to provide timely documentation of clinical notes (e.g. H&P, consult review, discharge summaries, medication reconciliation, etc.).  In addition, the incumbent is expected to coordinate and communicate the treatment plan of patients with various staff members as necessary. The ideal candidate will help to ensure that high quality patient care is delivered in a resourceful and efficient manner.
