    The VA Saint Louis Health Care System is recruiting for a Surgical Technician in Nursing Service, John Cochran Division.  The surgical technician is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures and participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Duties include but are not limited to: explains procedures to patient, assists with positioning of patients and adjusts equipment placement for patient's comfort; determines technical factors needed to perform surgical procedures, sets parameters that control and operate equipment/instruments; adjusts and monitors specialized equipment needed for difficult procedures; operates and maintains the sterility of surgical instruments and equipment for diagnostic and surgical procedures; cleans supply items and decontaminates the full range of reusable medical supplies and equipment; visually examines items for damage, deterioration or imperfections; observes the integrity, sterility and expiration data on prepackaged items; sterilizes items, determining appropriate methods of sterilization; assembles trays or sets according to guides and in a logical manner; supports physicians and nurses in the care and treatment of patients undergoing surgical procedures; transports patients pre-operatively and post-operatively; observes patients for change in condition; performs diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording and reporting deviations in vital signs, taking specimens, labeling specimens for laboratory; uses hot and cold packs, changes sterile dressings and assembles supporting equipment needed for surgical procedures.

    Work Schedule: Full-Time, Rotating tours-to include weekends and holidays, on-call

    Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.  Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
