The VA St Louis Health Care System is a 2 campus, full-service tertiary referral center, with 4 Community Based Outpatient Clinics, providing advanced inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation, as well as over 65 subspecialty areas, including the VA's busiest interventional cardiac program, interventional radiology and radiation oncology.

Duties

The VA St. Louis Health Care System is currently recruiting for a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist, the position is located in the Compensated Work Therapy/Veterans Industries Team within the Recovery Program of the Mental Health Service of the St. Louis VAMC.  The incumbent provides vocational rehabilitation services to veterans with serious illness and/or substances use disorders.  In this role, the incumbent will also provide coverage for the Incentive Therapy and other Supported Employment staff in their absence. community.

All Recovery Program services are based on a philosophy that recovery from serious mental illness is possible.  Our mission is to nurture hope in veterans with serious mental illnesses and to assist them on their Recovery journey.  A goal that we have for all veterans who come to the Recovery Program is that they are able to live, learn, work, and develop social relations within their local community.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Based on referral from the established consult process, determines the vocational goals and objectives of the Veteran.
  • Determines the extent to which the Veteran possesses the knowledge, skills, or abilities necessary to meet the goals or objectives.
  • Through extensive individual guidance and counseling, assist Veterans in developing and/or refining skills necessary to secure and maintain employment.
  • Utilizes knowledge of program objectives of the local, state, and other Federal agencies to assist in locating appropriate training programs in the community that will be specifically suitable from the standpoint of the particular needs and problems of the individual.
  • Develops appropriate employment opportunities that is aligned to the Veterans vocational goal by maintaining awareness of and utilizes knowledge of program objectives of the local, state, and other Federal agencies, as well as fosters community relationships.
  • Establishes training programs to satisfy common needs of the Veteran base (i.e., literacy training, customer service training, effective communications, etc.)
  • Maintains awareness and fosters community contacts by maintaining day-to-day contact with potential employers, placement personnel, or other likely placement resources.
  • Evaluates the results of the program and makes sound professional recommendations for suggested changes.
  • Counsels and guides the Veterans through difficult transition or rough spots in the adjustment to the job.
  • Provides on and/or off the job support to ensure sufficient time in adjusting to the demands of the job.
  • Complete all necessary documentation for CPRS, NEPEC, and other required documentation within the designated time frame per CWT/VI policy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.  This might include covering for other Vocational Services programs.

Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
