    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995 with the integration of the VA medical centers in West Haven and Newington. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. A Women's Health Center is located at the West Haven campus. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. VA Connecticut is part of the VA New England Healthcare System, which includes facilities in Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In addition to our main campuses, VA Connecticut operates six community-based primary care centers in Danbury, New London, Stamford, Waterbury, Winsted and Windham.

    The position is located within the Mental Health Service Line at VACT HealthCare System. The Supported Employment (SE) program falls under the umbrella of the Compensated Work Therapy program. The Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist (VRS) within the SE program is responsible for utilizing the practices of the Evidence Based Recovery Model to provide individualized job finding and job retention services to Veterans with significant barriers to employment, primarily Veterans with severe and persistent mental illness and with minimal to no employment histories (75% of the caseload must meet criteria for chronic, severe persistent mental illness, Veterans with psychotic disorder diagnoses. The Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist for the SE program works directly with Veterans who have been referred to the Supported Employment program. The Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist also works closely with members of the interdisciplinary team including Physicians, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Peer Specialists, Nurses and other care providers within the facility and in the community. The Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist works with community agencies and community employers with the goal of assisting Veterans in obtaining and maintaining suitable employment. The Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist for the SE program ensures that activities performed under the SE program adhere and meet the Evidence Based Supported Employment Fidelity Scale. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

    • Utilize Motivational Interviewing Techniques
    • Vocational Assessment Profiles (VAP)
    • Gather information to help assist the Veteran in identifying occupational area in which they would like to target their job search
    • Provide assistance with job seeking skills and strategies as needed
    • Negotiate work site accommodations that may be needed
    • Provide initial and/or ongoing onsite coaching
    • Document all interactions with the Veteran
    • Enter initial assessment data, progress notes, Individualized Recovery Plans, and discharge summaries into the electronic medical record
    • Analyze mental and physical limitations or other handicaps
